“Many thanks for a beneficial course. I am a person who inclines toward the theoretical, and I know much of the theory [concerning photography], but the practical is something quite different, and I learned very much! Moreover, Jeloy was a discovery to me. Thank you also for an incredibly nice book – with regard to both the pictures and the text!”
Geir Ellingsrud (former dean of the University of Oslo)
Participant on the course from the 12th to the 14th of June 2009 (Jeloy)

”I had three enlightening and enjoyable days on Jeloy, and the course exceeded my expectations. I was curious to see how much weight you would give to the different subjects, and how the plan would work out. I think you achieved a good balance between the reviewing of basic knowledge and [the giving of] new challenges. And the people in the group fit reasonably well together. You were thorough in your explanations, and convincing, having knowledge of all the subjects we went through and the questions we posed, while avoiding the trap of lengthy elaborations. Good!”

Many thanks (…) for a wonderful weekend. You are a fantastic teacher, who paints verbal images with great care and patience. That makes it [the new learning] easy to comprehend – both the theory and the practice. The combination of practical photography, theory and image editing was perfect. You master composition both in images and in teaching. The course has inspired me to shoot pictures more often, and to play with image editing in Photoshop.

”The course was very well planned, with a great mix of theory and practice. It was very good that the practical part came right after the theoretical part, since this meant that we could try things out immediately. I have gained an unbelievable amount of knowledge of camera settings, and of how to find motifs outdoors, in nature.”

”Many thanks for this weekend! As I hope you understood, all my expectations were completely satisfied. Perhaps I, with my level of knowledge and my experiences, fit the profile of the ideal participant perfectly. In any case, the course gave me more than I had hoped for of tips, advice and new insight. Because of this, the course also gave me so much inspiration that I cannot wait to start employing the new knowledge. This certainly makes for more and better images!”

”I enjoyed every minute these two days also, and have learned heaps. (…) At the level 1-course this spring I got a real aha-experience, and was very inspired both by the manner of your teaching and by how we were made to approach the assignments. (…) I therefore quickly decided to register for the level 2-course this autumn, and I do not for a moment regret it. I have truly become an enthusiast.”

”I came to the course conducted by Edmund Schilvold as a lost amateur photographer, and went home motivated to learn much, much more. ”I had big expectations for this course. Some [of the curriculum] I knew from before, but I learned a lot. The course was well laid out, with a good combination of teaching indoors and photography outdoors. It was also very advantageous that we were only five people, since this meant that everyone got the help that was needed. The course satisfied my expectations, and I highly recommend it to others with an interest in photography.”

Some facts regarding the workshops/courses:
The courses held on Jeloy (the island of Jeloy, known as “the gem of the Oslofjord”) usually began at 2 or 3pm on Friday and ended at 2 or 3 pm on Sunday, consisting of between 18 and 20 hours of tuition in total. The number of participants was kept low, between three and six, in order to ensure a high quality experience.
Since I first began conducting long-weekend photography workshops, back in April 2008, I have planned and led approximately 40 such workshops, and had more than 150 photography-interested adults (usually between the age of 30 and 60) as students.
In 2010, I also organized a weeklong photography “safari” in Western Ireland, with Coopershill manor in county Sligo as the base. In February and March 2011, I taught an evening course in photography for the Norwegian educational establishment Folkeuniversitetet (the People’s University).
